Bats get a bad reputation for being creepy or disease-ridden, but they’re actually doing loads of important work that keeps ecosystems functioning properly. These flying mammals have evolved some absolutely mental adaptations that make them brilliant at jobs other animals can’t do. These unique bats prove that nature would be in serious trouble without them doing their thing every night.

Mexican free-tailed bats eat tons of crop pests.

These bats form colonies of millions in places like Texas, and they eat absolutely mental amounts of insects every night. A single colony can consume over 100 tons of insects in one night, including moths whose caterpillars destroy cotton and corn crops.

Without these bats hoovering up crop pests, farmers would need way more pesticides to protect their fields. The bats are basically providing free pest control worth billions to agriculture while keeping chemical use down, which benefits everyone from farmers to people eating the food.

Tube-lipped nectar bats have impossibly long tongues.

These South American bats have tongues that are one and a half times their body length, stored coiled up in their chest cavity. They use these ridiculous tongues to reach nectar in deep tubular flowers that no other animal can access, making them the only pollinators for certain plant species.

The plants they pollinate have evolved specifically to be bat-pollinated, with long tubes that exclude other animals. Without these bats, those plant species would become extinct, which would then affect all the other species that depend on those plants for food or habitat.
