Most of us grew up obsessed with dinosaurs, those colossal creatures that once ruled the Earth and vanished millions of years ago.
However, not everyone’s convinced they were ever real. As strange as it sounds, there’s a small but vocal group of people who genuinely believe dinosaurs are a hoax, dreamed up by scientists, museums, or even governments.
Their reasoning ranges from mildly eccentric to completely baffling. Some question the evidence, others reject the science behind fossils altogether, and a few think it’s all part of a wider conspiracy. It’s a strange world of scepticism where logic often takes a back seat, and imagination runs wild.
They think museums fake the skeletons.
Some people claim museum dinosaur displays are plaster casts and replicas, which they are, but they miss the point that these casts are made from real fossils. The originals are too fragile and valuable to display, so they’re kept in research collections.
The conspiracy assumes scientists are lying about having original fossils at all. But thousands of palaeontologists across different countries and institutions have all examined real fossil evidence independently, making a coordinated fake nearly impossible to maintain for over a century.
They believe fossils are planted by scientists for funding.
The theory goes that palaeontologists bury fake fossils and then discover them to justify their research grants and keep their jobs. It ignores the fact that fossils are found by amateur collectors, construction workers and children, not just professional scientists.
This also assumes every geologist, museum curator, university, and government scientific institution worldwide is in on the same scam. The coordination required makes it far more complicated than dinosaurs just having existed, which is what actually happened.
Religious texts don’t mention them.
Some creationists argue that if dinosaurs existed, they would appear in ancient religious texts. Since the Bible doesn’t explicitly mention dinosaurs by name, they conclude the animals never existed and fossils must be something else entirely.
This ignores that ancient people had no concept of prehistory or deep time. They didn’t have the framework to understand creatures from millions of years ago, so expecting specific mentions of dinosaurs in texts written thousands of years ago doesn’t make logical sense.
They think the bones are from giant humans or nephilim.
There’s a belief in some circles that dinosaur fossils are actually the remains of giant humans mentioned in biblical texts or mythological beings. They reinterpret fossil evidence to fit religious narratives rather than accepting what the anatomy clearly shows.
The problem is that dinosaur skeletons have completely different bone structures from mammals. The hip joints, skull shapes and limb proportions don’t match any known human or mammal anatomy, giant or otherwise, which is why scientists can tell them apart immediately.
They say carbon dating is unreliable.
Some people reject dinosaur timelines because they distrust carbon dating, claiming it’s inaccurate or manipulated. What they often don’t understand is that carbon dating isn’t even used for dinosaur fossils because it only works on organic material up to about 50,000 years old.
Dinosaur fossils are dated using radiometric dating of the surrounding rock layers, a completely different method. Dismissing carbon dating as proof dinosaurs didn’t exist shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how fossilisation and geological dating actually work.
They think Satan planted fossils to test faith.
A surprisingly common belief is that the devil buried dinosaur bones in the ground to deceive people into doubting religious creation stories. This conveniently explains away all physical evidence while requiring no actual proof of deception.
The theological problem here is that it makes God look either powerless to stop this deception or complicit in allowing billions of people to be misled by fake evidence. It creates more questions than it answers while ignoring that fossils exist regardless of who put them there.
They claim dinosaurs lived alongside humans.
Rather than denying dinosaurs existed, some people insist they lived at the same time as humans and were killed off in Noah’s flood. This requires ignoring the 65 million year gap between dinosaur extinction and human evolution, plus all stratigraphic evidence.
There’s no archaeological evidence of humans and non-avian dinosaurs coexisting. No dinosaur fossils in the same rock layers as human remains, no cave paintings of T. rexes, nothing. The timeline simply doesn’t support this, no matter how much people want it to fit biblical chronology.
They say it’s a global conspiracy for atheism.
Some believe the scientific establishment invented dinosaurs to promote evolution and undermine religious belief. In this view, dinosaurs are propaganda tools rather than real animals, part of a coordinated effort to secularise society.
This falls apart when you realise many palaeontologists are religious themselves, and dinosaur discoveries started in the 1800s across multiple countries with different religious and political systems. A conspiracy that large, lasting that long, involving religious and non-religious scientists worldwide, strains credibility far more than extinction events.
They think the timeline doesn’t make sense.
Young Earth creationists believe the planet is only 6,000 to 10,000 years old based on biblical genealogies, which obviously conflicts with dinosaurs living 65 to 230 million years ago. Rather than reconsidering their timeline, they reject dinosaurs entirely or claim they’re much younger.
This requires dismissing multiple independent dating methods, geological layering, tectonic plate movement, and astronomical observations that all point to an ancient Earth. It’s choosing a specific interpretation of religious text over observable, testable physical evidence from different scientific fields.
They believe bones are misidentified modern animals.
Some argue that what scientists call dinosaur fossils are actually large crocodiles, elephants, or other modern animals that got fossilised and misidentified. This ignores the clear anatomical differences that even amateur fossil enthusiasts can spot.
Dinosaurs had unique skeletal features that don’t exist in any living animal, like the specific hip structures that define them or the hollow bones found in theropods. Claiming they’re just misidentified modern species requires ignoring what the bones actually look like and how they’re structured.
