The good news is, there are plenty of plants that grow quickly, look great, and don’t demand constant attention. Whether you’re looking to hide a fence, block a view, or simply carve out your own quiet corner, these low-maintenance picks will help you do it quickly and with far less stress than you might think.

1. Bamboo (Fargesia varieties)

Not all bamboo is the invasive kind. Clumping bamboos like Fargesia are ideal for UK gardens because they grow fast but stay well-behaved, offering dense, upright greenery perfect for screening. They’re evergreen, don’t need pruning, and are surprisingly hardy. Just make sure they’re planted in well-draining soil and watered during dry spells. Beyond that, they more or less take care of themselves.

2. Leylandii (Cupressus × leylandii)

Love it or hate it, Leylandii grows incredibly fast. It can give you a thick green hedge in no time, especially if you want to block out a road or unsightly view. The key to keeping it low-maintenance is regular trimming once or twice a year. Leave it too long, and it becomes a nightmare, but with light upkeep, it offers year-round privacy and a classic look.

3. Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium)

Privet is a classic hedge plant for a reason. It’s semi-evergreen in most UK regions, keeps a neat shape, and grows at a reliable pace throughout the warmer months. It can be trimmed into formal shapes or left a little looser for a more natural look. Plus, it’s happy in most soils and copes well with both sun and shade.

4. Griselinia littoralis

This New Zealand native is gaining popularity in the UK for its glossy green leaves and quick growth. It’s evergreen, neat-looking, and handles salt air well, which is perfect for coastal gardens. It thrives in full sun or light shade and only needs a couple of trims a year to keep it tidy. It’s also less prone to pests and diseases than some other hedge options.

5. Escallonia

If you want a hedge that gives you flowers as well as privacy, Escallonia is a solid choice. It produces clusters of pink, red, or white blooms in summer and keeps its foliage year-round in mild areas. It grows quickly and doesn’t fuss about soil type, as long as it gets decent sun. Once established, it’s drought tolerant too, making it ideal for lower-maintenance gardens.

6. Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)

Hornbeam is deciduous, but it holds onto its brown leaves through winter, giving you more screening than you might expect. In spring, it bursts back into life with fresh, pale green foliage. It grows well in cooler, wetter parts of the UK and can be pruned into a formal hedge or left as a looser natural screen. Once it’s established, it barely needs more than a yearly trim.

7. Pyracantha (Firethorn)

For a privacy plant that also gives you colour and berries, Pyracantha is a great multi-tasker. It’s evergreen, fast-growing, and absolutely covered in white flowers followed by bright orange or red fruit. It’s also thorny, so it acts as a natural deterrent. Train it along a wall or fence, and with just occasional shaping, it’ll create a thick, tough screen that keeps things private and secure.

8. Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus)

Cherry laurel is one of the fastest-growing hedge plants in the UK and delivers dense, shiny green leaves all year round. It’s ideal for blocking out sound and sightlines in urban gardens. It’s not picky about soil and will grow in full sun or shade. Once you’ve got it to your preferred height, a trim once or twice a year is all it needs to stay looking smart.

9. Dogwood (Cornus alba)

Dogwood is known more for its winter stems than dense foliage, but in spring and summer, it fills out nicely and can be used as a loose, informal screen. The colourful red or yellow stems shine once the leaves drop. It’s a good option if you want something seasonal and interesting. Cut it back hard in spring for the brightest stem colour and let it regrow fast throughout the year.

10. Buddleia (Butterfly bush)

Buddleia grows fast, flowers like mad in summer, and attracts clouds of butterflies. While not evergreen, it provides a thick leafy presence during the warmer months, which is ideal for seasonal privacy. Cut it back hard in late winter or early spring and it’ll come back stronger every year. It thrives in poor soil and basically looks after itself once it’s in the ground.

For something smaller and neater, Viburnum tinus gives you evergreen leaves, clusters of white flowers in winter, and a tidy growth habit. It’s slow to start but speeds up once established. It works well in mixed borders as well as hedges, and doesn’t need frequent pruning, just a tidy-up here and there to remove dead or damaged bits.

12. Elaeagnus × ebbingei

Also known as Ebbinge’s silverberry, this hardy evergreen is fast-growing and adaptable to different soils and weather. It has silvery undersides to its leaves and tiny, fragrant flowers in autumn. It’s great for windy or coastal spots, and once it’s in, it needs minimal upkeep. Just a light prune to keep its shape and you’re done.
